Taking a taxi
Hail one on the street or use a ride-hailing app. Show the destination on a map or in Korean.
How it works
1. How to catch one
Hail a taxi with its light on, or use a taxi stand. A ride-hailing app such as Kakao T lets you set the destination even without a shared language. The app may require a Korean phone number or verification.
2. Types
Besides standard taxis, there are deluxe (mobeom) taxis and larger taxis. They are told apart by colour and markings, and their fare structures differ.
3. Fares and payment
Fares run on the meter, with a late-night surcharge possible. Many taxis accept both cash and card. Getting a receipt when you get out helps with lost items or any dispute.
4. Telling the driver where to go
Many drivers do not speak Japanese, so showing the destination on a map app or a note written in Korean is the surest way. Naming a well-known building or landmark near your destination also helps.
Tips
- Check that the meter is running before you set off.
- Registering for the ride-hailing app in advance is reassuring.
- Take a receipt after you pay.
